Aluminum Wire Conditioning
In the mid 1960’s, aluminum wiring was introduced into homes due to a substantial increase in copper prices. Only after millions of homes had been wired in the following decade using aluminum, did it become apparent that many problems were occurring. These ranged from intermittent power to electrical fires. The reason for this is that aluminum has a very high expansion and contraction rate when under a high heat condition produced by electrical load. This results in connections becoming loose which creates arcing. This dangerous condition will eventually cause the outlet or switch to fail, or worse, cause an electrical fire.
